Direct answer

A pip is a standardized unit used to describe a Forex price change. For many currency pairs one pip is 0.0001; for many JPY pairs it is 0.01. The money value of a pip depends on the currency pair, position size, account currency, and exchange rate.

Pips and pipettes

Most non-JPY pairs conventionally use the fourth decimal place as one pip. Many brokers quote an additional fractional digit called a pipette. For many JPY pairs the second decimal place is one pip and the third is a pipette.

How to count pips

Subtract the entry price from the exit price for a long trade, or reverse the subtraction for a short trade, then divide by the pair's pip size. EUR/USD moving from 1.0800 to 1.0825 is 25 pips.

  • EUR/USD: 0.0001 is commonly one pip
  • USD/JPY: 0.01 is commonly one pip
  • Five-digit quotes include fractional pips

How pip value connects to lot size

Pip value grows with position size. For some USD-quoted pairs a standard lot is often close to $10 per pip, but account currency and exchange rates can change that number. Broker specifications are the source of truth.

Use pips to control risk

Measure the distance from entry to technical invalidation in pips, choose the money amount at risk, and calculate lot size from those two values. A wider valid stop requires a smaller position.

Questions about pips in Forex trading

How much is one pip?

It is commonly 0.0001 for non-JPY pairs and 0.01 for JPY pairs, but the money value depends on the position and currencies.

What is a pipette?

A pipette is one-tenth of a pip, often shown as the fifth decimal place or third decimal place for many JPY pairs.

How many pips should a stop loss be?

There is no universal number. The stop should reflect market structure and volatility, then position size should adapt to that distance.

Are points and pips identical?

Not always. Terminology varies by broker and instrument, so check the platform's contract specification.
